As a leatherworker and designer, I am constantly looking for ways to connect my craft with sustainability and transparency. It is not just about beautiful products, but about the whole picture that is right. The story behind the materials and their origins is at least as important to me as the end result. My project HUGO was born from this conviction.
HUGO started with an ox on a small farm in the Flemish Ardennes. This farm, where care and respect for animals are central, slaughters one cow every year to provide the community with meat. However, the cow's hide remained unused and was considered waste. I thought that was a shame.
I decided to give the hide a new life and took it to a tannery, where it was processed in a sustainable way. With this leather, I create a collection in which nothing is wasted - a tribute to the cow, HUGO. Every part of the leather is used, and each piece tells a story of care, reuse and craftsmanship.
With HUGO, I want to show that craftsmanship and sustainability can go hand in hand. It is my way of contributing to a conscious way of working, in which people, animals and nature are respected.
